Gheralta is one of Ethiopia’s beautiful mountain ranges that rise from the surrounding plain near the town of Hawzen. It is home to 35  incredible rock-cut churches, but what you might not know is that this area is also home to one of the best scenic and towering mountains under the African sky.

It has a combination of stunning nature, hidden ancient churches, and the beautiful culture of the Tigray people, Gheralta is a place where you can go for an amazing trekking.

The finest Ethiopia mountain churches situated in high isolation on the outcrops of the Gheralta massive. The mountains effectively served as a natural wall and an important sanctuary for monastic life. Although there are many cave churches in northern Ethiopia, the largest number is found in the Tigray region, especially the largest concentration in Gheralta Massive. so it’s no surprise that it hides some of Ethiopia’s oldest rock-cut churches. Some churches carved out of the Rock in the 4-6th century.

The walks to the top are steep and a real heart starts from the middle with stunning views the entire way. Most hikes will take around 1.5 hours with a series of breaks along the way.
